Tidbit

Yesterday I took the GRE test. It was a fairly grueling 4 hour ordeal, but I think it went well. Graduate school has been put temporarily on the back burner for now, but the results of the test are good for several years, so I figured now was probably as good a time as any to study and take them.
My gold star was definitely the quantitative or "the math I haven't used in 10 years" section. It was a uphill battle studying for that section - reviewing how to manipulate fractions, find area of a triangle, distribute exponents, factor and identify multi-variable functions, WORD PROBLEMS!!!! Even though it was a torturous event, I think it did something to relieve my mathaphobia - so yeah me!

Now that the studying and test taking is over, I am off to enjoy the New Year and the rest of my winter break!

Week 15 - Things are starting to happen!

Things are finally starting to happen! For the last 8 weeks or so, since we found out we are pregnant, it has all sort of felt like make believe. I have, very very fortunately, not experienced ANY of the typical symptoms of pregnancy - no morning sickness, no cravings, no appetite loss, no nothing. The only apparent symptom has been the frequency in which I have to pee!

That all seems to be changing, however. I am still feeling really good, still eating well, and participating in all my activities, but there is a starting to be a noticeable changes in my body. I have been waking up in the mornings feeling like I have done 1000 sit-ups. Muscles are moving and stretching and I have the slightest hint of a bump! Exciting stuff......

What's in a name?

Ok.... so I feel compelled to post an explanation for the name of this blog. The name was given to us by a friend who knows our love for Ultimate Frisbee.
Phil and I have been a part of the Hilo Ultimate Frisbee community now for about 3 years and it has become a very integral part of our social and recreational lives here in Hilo. We have met some of our best friends through this community and playing ultimate has given us an avenue for exercise and decompression after school and work.
The Hilo Ultimate community has shown great support and enthusiasm for us and cant wait to have another Ultimate baby on the sidelines. We already know that this baby is going to be born into a community of ultimate aunties and uncles who, through their support, will allow Phil and I to continue play the game that we have come to love!

Oh technology!

Right after Thanksgiving Phil and I had an appointment with the obgyn where they scheduled an ultrasound in order to pinpoint the due date. WOW! - That was my initial and continued response to this experience. I was not prepared for the clarity and detail we would be able to see; arms, legs, developing spinal chord, and umbilical chord- the whole 5cm!

At first, "Bean" as Phil has dubbed it, was still but then started jumping around, dancing on the ceiling of my uterus. That was both bizarre and wonderful to say the least. I was really grateful for this experience because up until that point the whole pregnancy was feeling like make-believe. I wasn't experiencing any of the typical symptoms of pregnancy and the ultrasound definitely validated what we were going through.

Another surprise came when we discovered that I was about two weeks farther along than originally thought. That puts my due date at JUNE 15th - just days after school lets out!

What happened to the first trimester?

Welcome to my attempt at a personal blog and to my 14th week of pregnancy.
I will try to bring things up to date in the next few posts, but I have to say - so-far-so-good!

I am now officially on winter break which should give me some time to pause, and reflect on what exactly is happening to me, and share some of these experiences with friends and family. In this season of thanksgiving, let me take a moment to be grateful for all the wonderful blessings in my life. I am grateful for Phil- my strong, compassionate, understanding, protective, and excited partner and father to be. Pregnancy has thus far been nothing but a wonderful journey that we are sharing together!

I am grateful for our wonderful families who have given a lot of support already, even though we are oceans apart. You guys are the best! And of course I am so lucky and appreciative of all our friends both near and far who have lavished us with good wishes, books, baby gear, and big open hearts! Life just wouldn't be as good without you.

So let the journey begin, or should I say continue..... for we are happy and hapai in Hawaii!
